Abia assembly amends customary court bill

Abia House of Assembly has passed into law, the Customary Court Bill (Amendments) No 8, 2008 with the sole aim of enhancing the renumeration of members of the Customary Courts.
The House further ammended the jurisdiction of Customary Courts in civil causes and matters shall come into effect from April 20, 2008.
The law stipulates that for the purpose of adequate reward, a member of the Customary Court who completes his or her tenure in office shall recieve one hundred per cent (100%) of the annual basic salary as severance allowance provided that the allowance shall not be recieved more than once by a member.
Furthermore in causes and matters under law includiung lotteries, pool betting, gaming and casino, law (other than customary laws) and also laws in respect of debt, demands, damage of rate have upper limit of N50, 000, while slander and descretion had upper limit of N50, 000.peaker of the House, Hon Agwu .U. Agwu in his remarks congratulated the members for passing into law the bill and enjoined them to work harder towards achieving more results in the days ahead.
