FCTA introduces hotlines on criminals
By David Aduge-Ani, Abuja
In its efforts to ensure adequate security in Abuja, the FCT Administration has introduced telephone hotlines that will be used to facilitate the interception of all city laws violators whenever such violations are made.
The FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar made this disclosure during the weekís FCT Operational Department briefing in Abuja.
The minister reiterated that these are measures put in place not only to apprehend traffic regulations and environmental laws violators, but also to keep a tap on the entire Federal Capital City to stem any criminal activities.
According to him, the hotlines will enable residents instantly report any funny movement from any quarter or district of Abuja to the law enforcement agents for immediate action.
Umar stated that by such measure, all residents of the Federal Capital Territory will effectively participate in the policing of the 8,000 square kilometer of the entire territory for the benefit of all.
According to him, "the residents of the territory have an option to either take control of their city or leave it in the hands of the hoodlums and criminals who will in turn put them in bondage."
The minister revealed further that arrangement has been concluded to launch a special security outfit named Metropolitan Patrol in the Federal Capital Territory , Abuja, to strengthen the laudable efforts of the Abuja Crime Control Squad (ACCOS) for effective combing and monitoring of all the city neighborhood centers in the Abuja metropolis.
He assured that the outfit will be launched by the middle of May 22, 2008 to coincide with the one year anniversary of President Umaru Musa YaríAdua; adding that 65 brand new vehicles for the outfit will be commissioned.
Dr. Umar disclosed that between, 7th April to 5th May 2008, the FCT Administration impounded 221 motorcycles used illegally in the Federal Capital City.
The minister remarked that the area worst hit by the commercial motorcyclists is the Area 1 Secretariat junction where they emanate from Dagba Village.
Umar condemned the actions of the hoodlums who organized themselves into different gangs and attacked the Abuja Environmental Protection Board office in Area 3 with boxes of knives and daggers in an attempt to retrieve the seized motorcycles parked within the office.
"The FCT Administration will not tolerate a situation where hoodlums will decide to take the laws into their hands even in the presence of the police to unleash terror", the Minister emphasized.
He reminded them that the commercial motorcycle remained banned in the Federal Capital City.
