...As Soul Quest wins national championship
High brow entertainment hang out in Ikeja, Planet One recently witnessed a massive turnout of guests and fun seekers when the contest for the final national prize of the on-going Malta Guinness Street Dance Competition held in Lagos . The regional events, which kick off in April at the tin city of Jos, moved on to Abuja, Port - Harcourt, Benin and ended in Lagos where the last of the regional events held.
At the regional events which were held across the country, 'Aamen', an all masked crew were crowned winners in the Jos region, while Soul Quest emerged winners at the Abuja regional contest. In Port - Harcourt, Genesis carried the day, while X - Fellaz were declared winners in the Benin region. After an outstanding performance, Outrage emerged winners in the Lagos regional contest which recorded a large turnout of contestants for the first screening.
The national event which was anchored by MC extraordinaire, Deji Falope of the Soundcity fame also had the irrepressible comedian, AY on hand to thrill audience with some rib cracking jokes.
After a keenly contested first round, which was an exhibition of the best of impeccable choreographical dance steps by the five regional dance crews, Outrage, X- Fellaz and Soul Quest emerged the initial final three to contest for the final slot, whose winner would represent Nigeria in the pan - African Malta Guinness Street Dance Competition, which comes up in Nigeria, later this month.
Mo-hits, a Lagos based Hip - Hop rave making group, performed to the elated crowd, who were very eager to listen to more tunes from the group. Another highpoint of the show was when the ever impressive MC, Deji Falope, introduced Symba Manoly, a popular South African, who had been working with the crew members, to come unto the stage to exhibit some exciting dance steps.
The second round contest, which was the final competition, was kick started by Outrage clad in green/black T-shirt on Jean pants, the crew danced, wriggled and exhibited some steps that made the crowd who defied the rain to be part of the epoch making show, to scream for more of the action, next on the bill to perform was the crew of black masked guys from Benin zone, X - Fellaz.
These guys from the Edo State Capital, exhibited some traditional dance steps, which they blended with some contemporary styles, then came the turn of Soul Quest, the dancing lords from Abuja, that came in black T shirts and brown trousers did well in their choreographic displays, which got the judges quite excited, even the crowd which was made up of the family members and friends of the crew dancers from the various zones had a good time enjoying every bit of the activities that came up through out the event.
To add more spice to the event, the nice one and the present rave of the Nigerian musician, 9ice came on stage and set the whole place on fire with his tunes, and the roof top of Planet One; venue, of the event was almost brought down when Abolore Akande, fondly called 9ice, rendered his chart busting track in his latest work, Gongo Aso, amongst others. Elated party revelers who were there present could not help but sing along with him, it was quite a spectacle to behold, as the whole place was charged and everybody became 9ice, dancing and wriggling and exhibiting various great dance steps, which made the crooner himself, give out his best.
After this exciting performance, then came the D' time, the moment all the crew members, their family members, friends and other party buffs at the event were waiting for. While 9ice was performing the judges were compiling the results, then came the time to announce the results, no doubt most of the crew dance members had butterflies in their tummies, waiting to hear the announcement, then MC, Deji Falope, came on stage and gave the result.
Soul Quest, emerged the national champion of the keenly contested Malta Guinness Street Dance competition, an initiative, which the internationally acclaimed non-alcoholic malt drink, Malta Guinness, from the stable of Nigeria's foremost brewery, Guinness Nigeria Plc, organized, to showcase the creativity in Nigerian youths and helping them to tap into it, develop themselves, while also enhancing Nigeriaís tourism potentials.
Soul Quest will represent Nigeria , in the forthcoming African Continent Street Dance Competition, coming up in Nigeria . The Nigerian winners would lock horns with other winners from Ghana, Cameroun , Tanzania and Kenya . The continental winner will represent Africa at the World Street Dance Competition, taking place in UK in August, 2008.
Giving a vote of thanks, after presenting the prize to the winners, Keith Taylor, Managing Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc, said "The dancing has been incredible". He went on to say that, "the brand will continue to come up with innovative initiatives that would continue to be customer friendly". He rounded up by thanking all those who have made the competition successful.
